Key Peninsula: water systems, wells and septic

Where Key Peninsula water comes from
It comes from wells and small systems, and the name to look for is on your bill. Washington Water's list includes Longbranch Estates #1 to #4, Longbranch Highlands, Longbranch Shores Water Association and Rosedale-26th St Kps.
Peninsula Light runs a water department for the peninsulas, begun in 1996 after Pierce County raised the scarcity of water service companies in the area. Its 2025 figures are over 3,300 connections, 64 owned and 51 managed systems. It places the peninsulas' water source in the deepest aquifers beneath them.

Testing a private well here
You test it yourself. DOH says private well owners are responsible for their own testing and recommends coliform bacteria and nitrate every year. Tacoma-Pierce County Health's page says something different for single-family wells: bacteria yearly, nitrate every third year. Pick knowingly. DOH keeps a list of labs, and private wells walks through the steps. A home kit can flag a question; only a lab result answers it.
For screening only, never in place of a lab test, one store sells a well water test kit. SoftPro and this atlas are run by the same team.
Septic and the bays
The health department's Key Peninsula office covers septic repair incentives and water quality information on bays, streams and drinking water wells. Its schedule was listed as coming soon, so confirm before you drive there.
Income-eligible owners in mapped areas can get $125 off a routine septic inspection, plus further discounts, the department's page says. Burley Lagoon is one of 5 shellfish protection districts in Pierce County, and the department lists failing septic systems as a common cause of poor water quality. A 2022 public meeting covered Filucy Bay and Burley Lagoon. See septic care on the peninsulas and, before a sale, the Report of System Status. Near the water, bluff and shoreline questions go to the county.
Nobody should go into a septic tank or lift its lid to look; that is our advice rather than a published rule. A certified septic company does the opening. A sewage smell in the yard is a reason to call the health department and keep people away.
